Welcome to the sound. Welcome to the legacy. Welcome to The Tommies.
Rev. Milton Brunson’s Grammy Award-Winning Thompson Community Singers, affectionately known as “The Tommies,” is one of the most influential gospel choirs in American music history. Founded in 1948 by the late Rev. Milton Brunson, in Chicago. The choir began as a local ministry rooted in worship, community, and musical excellence.
From its humble beginnings, the Thompson Community Singers grew into a nationally and internationally recognized ensemble, becoming a cornerstone of traditional and contemporary gospel music. Under Rev. Brunson’s visionary leadership, the choir developed a signature sound—powerful, polished, and deeply spiritual—that resonated across generations.
Throughout the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, The Tommies rose to prominence with a series of groundbreaking recordings that helped shape the modern gospel landscape. Their music, characterized by rich harmonies, dynamic choir arrangements, and heartfelt messages, earned widespread acclaim within both church and mainstream audiences.
Their excellence was recognized with prestigious honors, including a Grammy Award, along with multiple nominations and accolades from the gospel music community.
Under the leadership of Mrs. Joe Ann Brunson, the widow of the late Rev. Milton Brunson, The Tommies continue to faithfully carry the mantle established by our founder. With unwavering dedication, we remain active, lifting our voices and sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ with audiences both near and far.
Rooted in legacy yet alive with purpose, the choir continues to minister through music that inspires, uplifts, and unites generations. The spirit, excellence, and passion that defined our beginnings still guide us today.
We proudly uphold the rich tradition of 3rd Sunday Musicals, held quarterly at the historic Christ Tabernacle Baptist Church—also founded by the late Pastor Milton Brunson. These powerful gatherings serve as a cornerstone of our ministry, bringing together community, worship, and the timeless sound that has defined The Tommies for decades.
As we move forward, we remain committed to preserving our heritage while continuing to share a message that transcends time.
A legacy rooted in faith. A sound that still speaks. A ministry that continues.
